General Information

The principal fields of the Institute’s activity include theoretical research on molecular genetics, cytogenetics, experimental embryology and biotechnology, as well as the genetic background to the physiology of stress and animal etiology. Research in applied sciences is conducted in the fields of population genetics, animal breeding, as also animal maintenance and production systems. Studies on animal behaviour and welfare are an important complement. The principal aim of research in applied sciences is the elaboration of such methods of animal improvement and production, which render possible the production of safe and valuable food, simultaneously retaining a high level of animal welfare and a limited unfavourable effect of agriculture on the environment.

The research covers the following problems:

  • investigations on gene structure, expression and transfer in domestic animals;
  • investigations on the genome of domestic animals basing on genetic markers and the polymorphism of restriction DNA fragments;
  • embryo biotechniques;
  • genetic and physiological basis for stress reactivity in animals;
  • evaluation of the effectiveness of various methods of selection and animal improvement;
  • optimization of the systems of animal maintenance and utilization as related to quality and the nutritive and technological value of animal products.

The Institute runs Postgraduate Studies and is authorized to confer the degree of Doctor of Agricultural Sciences (PhD) as well as the degree of Habilitated Doctor (DSc).
