Selected scientific achievements
Initiation in Poland of regular studies on iron metabolism in mammals and co-initiation (together with dr Małgorzata Lenartowicz from Jagiellonian University) of studies on the interaction between copper and iron metabolisms. The latter have been awarded by the Divison of Biological and Agricultural Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 2011.
Demonstration that high/low level of labile iron pool established as a consequence of differentiated regulation of intracellular iron homeostasis in the two sublines of mouse lymphoblasts is the main cause of their sensitivity/resistance to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) These results provide a paradigm of the relationship between the regulation of intracellular iron homeostasis and mammalian cell sensitivity to oxidative stress.
Demonstration that IRP1 is critically important for the regulation of cellular iron transport andstorage by NO and uncovers aspects of iron metabolism that cannot be compensated byIRP2
Identification of molecular pathways and mechanisms of heme iron absorption in pig duodenum. Determination of innovative procedures of the correction of iron deficiency anemia in newborn piglets.
Realized research projects

Organizational activity, dissemination and others
Founder of the Polish Iron Club (PIC) and main organizer of successive Meetings of the Polish Iron Club (Jastrzębiec 2010 and 2015, Gdańsk 2017). Organizer and chairman of the “Iron Session” during the 2nd Polish Congress of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Cracow, September 5-9. Initiator and coordinator of the two cycles of articles on iron metabolism published in BioTechnologia (2011) and Kosmos (Tales of iron, 2014).
